After seeing how the others have done this, I went to home depot and bought the following parts.

(1) $2.62 Generic hinge (WITHOUT BUSHINGS!!)
(2) $1.99 Small pack of nuts and bolts
(4) $0.62 Piece of 4x4x8 tin

I then cut tin to the shape and contour of the oil pan. Leaving about 3/32" on the sides and 1/4" on the bottom. Drilled holes for mounting and secured to hinge with nuts and DOUBLED up the nuts. After the nuts are tight and locked to each other, take a hammer and peen the last thread over for safety and security. You can also see in the pic the hinge was trimmed to about 1" on the side that welds to the metal shield.

There is no cutting, or modding required to the pan. The shield is mild steel and so is the hinge. The 2nd pic shows how it was welded in. When your welding it, do small welds, as when I did it all at once it warped the hinge. It was easy to fix with a hammer and chisel, but save yourself the extra step and weld it in 3 or 4 passes and cool it down with water in between.

Total time involved in this is under two hours. That does NOT include the time it takes to take the pan out or put back in. Just trying to help those who have a mig welder, or a buddy that does. In all seriousness, if your going to all the trouble to pull the pan, you can do this super easy. The removal of the pan will be the biggest hurdle for most. G/L with any future projects, and feel free to PM with any questions.

The angle of the camera makes it look like that. The sump fits just fine.

@ Brandon - yup, fiixed SSDI $ does that to a person.

@ Jay - The pic was taken from the front side of the pan.

@ Ross - I know your going to mod pans for people on the side. But the hinge works, the fitment is good, and there is nothing wrong with what I have done. Im not trying to step on your side income, as most people wont attempt this. Im just posting this for those that can, and want to save a buck. A picture helps a ton when people are trying to figure out how to do something.

I would put a tack on the bolts just to make sure they don't come off.

@ Jay - Yes, I actually peened the end with a hammer just for that reason ;-) But thanks, I shoulda mentioned it in the first post. Will update it, thanks for the reminder.

I know its not pretty, but hell its in the oil pan, its meant to be functional not pretty. Anybody with deep wallets can go out and pay big money to get thiers modded. Im just offering a cheap alternative. Hell $5 to save the motor, I'll do that any day! :coolthumb:

You don't really even need a welder to do the mod - you can bolt the hinge on to the tray, also. Simple locking nuts would be more than enough to hold everything in place, as it's not at all a stressed component.

All the more power to you for making thing's happen on your own with a limited amount of money. Not very often do you find a guy doing thing's the crafty way. Hope it all turn's out sweet.

I used a smaller aluminum hinge and flapper when I made mine. The lighter it is the more responsive it is to the flow changes.

Aluminum piano hinge & either aluminum or S/S hardware.

I would definitely have to think twice about welding it. From the welds to the hardware there appears to be many opportunities for bad stuffs to contaminate.

Since the other feller's are only for AWD applications, kudos for you thnking about the 2WD guys as well! :cheers1:
