I recently flushed my system and used Valvoline synthetic dot 3 &4 fluid. It is fully compatible with the factory fluid and has a higher boiling point and less moisture absorption that conventional fluid.
I have had it in the car for 4 months or so and it has not caused a problem and flushing the lines was well worth it but a power brake bleeder is a must.

Here is what it looks like and you can buy it at places like napa or orielly auto parts. http://www.valvoline.com/products/brands/valvoline/dot-3-4-brake-fluid/28

You really need to look at the specs on the fluid, before buying, as DOT rating are simply minimum standards that must be met. Looking at the two fluids mentioned, the Valvoline 3/4 has a 480 deg. dry boiling point with a 311 deg. minimum wet (this is the important # to compare) boiling point. The Motul RBF600 is listed as an DOT4 fluid, but has much better specs @ 594 dry and 383 min. wet boiling points. I've used the RBF600 for a couple yrs. now in my hydraulic clutch, and it's a very good fluid with about the best specs out there. The DOT5 mentioned is NOT recommended for ABS braking systems - it's silicon based and not compatible with normal fluids. There is a DOT5.1 which is glycol based and OK to use.

Bump.

Want to flush out the brakes for new stainless lines, calipers, rotors and pads. Any more input on fluids and how much fluid I need to buy? The dealership just recommended DOT3 GM fluid since these trucks came with it:popcorn3:

So are you getting closer to a date? Or are you going to have the dealership do this?

DOT 4. pedal stiffness is much better than 3. Use a trusted brand like what others have suggested. Valvoline or Prestone are both good DOT 4 fluids to run.

Get some braided stainless lines from Steven and DOT 4 and you'll love the improvement

Yeah.... That's why I asked. Amazon didn't say the oz. the description did say that two bottles will do the entire brake system. I hope they are right. I can order another bottle just to be safe, they are only $15 a bottle.

1sickss, you'll need to get 3 of the 500ml bottles. It always takes me a little over three quarts. I like castrol dot 4. Previously called castrol Lma. I used to use the valvoline dot 3/4 in my daily's and it always gives me a mushy pedal even after multiple bleeds. Castrol has a higher wet boiling point than most off the shelf dot 4 which is what you want to look at. And it won't have to be flushed near as much as motul. Motul is really good fluid but is more hygroscopic. If you don't mind flushing every 6 months go with motul rbf600. If you want to wait for 1-2 years go with castrol. Every time I've used motul it looks like coffee after just a few months. Now I don't know if that means it's bad but it sure doesn't look pretty. I would never use a dot 5 in an abs system. It's not hygroscopic which means the water doesn't mix with the fluid causing the water to settle in low spots. This can and will cause damage to seals or rust out your lines.
