2006 TBSS owners!!


I know it's been a while that I've been promising a 6L80/90 solution for you, but it's FINALLY here; An easy and cost-effective option to a stronger transmission that will also let you go faster (not slower).

The 6L80/90 tranmission control module requires a computer to provide basic CAN bus messages in order to operate. Even I didn't this this would be possible to get around without doing a full ECM EFI and harness conversion, but time and persistence pays off and here we are. (NOTE: upgrading to an E67 still allows for better engine management performance)

Without future adieu, TBM presents its GM 6L80/90 Emulator "Standalone"

Maybe 5. Oddly, it was developed and marketed for the TBSS crowd, but my biggest market has been the GMT900 Avalanche/Tahoe/Silvy guys. Once they get their handed to them by a head/cam factory 6L80 GMT900 they recognize that (re-re-re-)rebuilding their 4L70 is just wasting time and money when a stock 6L80 will take anything up to 500 RWHP for less money than a slower 4L80 conversion.

So what all is needed to put a 6l90 in a 06 rwd tbss now?
I'm going to be running a turbo, hoping a 90 will hold up in a street application.

What he said but for '06 AWD... I need this, a 6L80/90 Transmission with converter plus what?

Very nice, i can see potential for quite a few different gm setups with this. I am already commited to my 4l80 conversion, so probably wont be going this route unfortunately. However, I would assume this would also require a crossmember, yoke, driveshaft?, cooler lines, converter, flexplate, and what else? Are you all going to provide a full bolt-in kit minus the tranny and converter?

You would need (our T42-T43 Interface Module-OPTIONAL for easy rewire), our custom transfer case adapter, and the standalone 6L80 unit. Plus, of course, a way to program the shifts and unlock the new found ECM performance. Stock LS2 TBSS tunes will be hitting VE table RPM ranges that are HEAVILY torque managed with a 6L80 swap.

The E67 has more and larger tuning tables that make it better to more precisely tune highly modified engines.


Your PRND321 works just the same, except that when the gear selector is manually placed in 3-2-1, it will not show when you are in 4 or 5, obviously. Additionally, depending on how you program the TCM it won't shift into or out of certain gears.

A 6L90 will more than hold up to a street use application up to about 600 WHP/WTQ provided you have it properly tuned and, of course, you keep it cool. Just remember that the 6 speeds keep your engine in a different, higher torque band. So you'll need to make sure you choose your cam/turbo/converter for the transmission you choose. A combo specifically set up for one transmission may not perform as well with another. (see below)

THINGS TO NOTE IN COMPARISON:
1) RPM when each gear shifts
2) How far below peak torque each shift puts the engine
3) RPM at given highway speed in O/D gear
4) As a rule of thumb, given the same power and axle ratio, the shorter a given transmission gear (i.e. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc) the sooner the vehicle will achieve it's given gear's maximum speed. For instance, a 6L80 will max out at a little above 30 MPH in 1st gear, but will achieve that speed sooner than in the 4L80. Additionally, the 6L80 will shift into it's peak torque curve at that speed to maintain momentum. By contrast the 4L70 will shift into 2nd well below it's peak torque and give that "lugging" feeling as it has fallen off of it's torque curve.

NO new crossmember or crossmember mod is necessary as the 6L80 is actually shorter than a 4L70. Just cut off the center stud in your transmission mount.

NO new flexplate is necessary. Bolts right to the LS2.

NO new converter is necessary unless you are running a custom motor or absolutely MUST launch as hard/fast as possible.

I have provided everything from just the interface module or transfer case adapter to the full transmission-to-transfer case. Entirely up to the financial resources, skill set and time commitment of the buyer.

This thread brought me back to the forum. :-) I remember you posting this a few years ago but this wouldn't work on my truck at the time. Is there any track data for the 6L80/90 swap that we could possibly look at that's recent. I've been wanting to do this after driving the new Jeeps with the 8 spds, but I have an 06. Being that you posted this, this means there is a way for me to do it now.

What about the driveshaft? I've converted to 2wd and would be curious would I need to have one custom made.

Also, are you in any of the FB TBSS groups? Because this would probably get a lot of people talking.

Also, is there a phone number cause I got a lot of questions. lol

Sadly, I have no personal track data since completing and fine tuning my 6L90 TBSS. An insured hit&run citizen saw to it that my TBSS will not be drivable for quite a while. So I have relied on my Silverado/Avalanche customers to keep me in the loop.

But renewed interest here and a desperate need to get my 5.3L 4WD TB up and running again has me itching to put together a crazy low budget, 3" lifted, high 11's 4.8L S/C w/6L80 AWD monster that can also blitz through trails and streams!! Already kicking around production of a solution to breaking front diff cases.

I think I belong to a few of the FB TBSS groups. After there was no interest from 2007+ owners a few years ago, I focused on other markets. But because the 06 guys have always showed me love, I'm back!

I'll PM you. All of this is just a part time thing now and I already get too many "tire-kickers" eating up my time to post my number.

This is interesting information here for sure. Let me make sure I'm understanding this correctly, based on the tables above the cruising RPM for each transmission at 75mph is as follows:

6L80/90 @ 75MPH, RPM = 2639
4L80 @ 75MPH, RPM = 2954
4L70 @ 75 MPH, RPM = 2757

Having 2 extra gears in the 6LXX trans I would expect a larger than 118 RPM difference at highway cruising speeds,. Unless I'm missing something?

Hmm lkq has 6l90's out of 2015 2500 chevys with low miles for 1,100 bucks. This maybe cheaper swap than I thought

No doubt, especially since a custom cross member isn't required and if I'm reading correctly we can use the torque converter out of the 4L70E and the flex plate.

It's a far better cost and performance benefit. That's why I did my trucks. I didn't want to pay more money to go slower and suck more fuel. And considering AWD SS's have to change out the transfer case input shaft, it's essentially a cost wash.

You can NOT use your 4L70E converter, but 99.99% of all salvage yards include the converter with the transmission. And again, stock stall speed is fine for all but the hardcore drag racer.

So barring that I do all my own labor, converter/flexplate, and have a transmission on hand from a G8?

What would be left for a 2wd?

The emulator, custom driveshaft, cooler lines, dipstick, yoke, does the original cross-member work on the 2wd? Can you use the spacer that's on the 2wd TBSS-4L70 on the 6L80? Also, am I understanding this correctly that I will be able to use the harness that plugs into the 4L70?

$1025 for the interface module
$2300 (approx list price) for new/low mileage salvage AWD 6L90
$400 (approx) for misc gaskets, oil tube/dipstick, cooler lines, fluids, etc
$1325 for Transmission to Transfer Case Adapter & 32 spline Input Shaft
$1025 ECM/TCM Interface and Harness
$500 Driveshaft/Propshaft Adjustment (may offer new balanced prop shaft as part of kit)
$1200 (R&R labor w/12hr @ $100/hr)
+New Tune (to optimize performance)
$6,750 (approx) + tax and shipping


07-09 RWD:

Well that answers a few of my questions about the crossmember. I probably can swing this as an inexpensive swap then if I can get some measurements for the G8 trans. We've got a local machine shop that builds driveshafts, so I'll see what they can do it for.

I have a couple of questions about this swap that I didn't see answered. I'm about to "gear up" and get a 6L90 for my stock 08 TBSS 2WD. I purchased the T42-T43 adaptor a couple years ago and I finally feel like pulling the trigger on the swap. Anyway, I haven't purchased a transmission and need to know if there is any specific year or model donor to get or avoid for my truck. I also plan on doing a rebuild on whatever I get anyway.
Also, I see in the FAQ's on the website:
"Running All Trailblazer SS's will require, at a minimum, the TCM Interface Module, harness and custom programmed ECM. Yes the ECM can be programmed as any other ECM by your favorite tuner for your specific vehicles other modifications."
I have an HP tuners suite and will be doing my own programming. What is it that I will need to change? Or is a base tune or change log provided? I'm assuming it's all TM stuff on an otherwise stock tune.
