Default HVAC Mode Door Actuator?

Before I broke the motor, I noticed that no matter what I did to the controls, the HVAC system was stuck moving air from the defroster and lower heater vents. The dealer diaged it as the mode door actuator, anyone have info on how to get to it in the center console and replace it? Any need for a Tech II to do any reprogramming, or is it a simple swap?

I can walk you through it, but I'm telling you it's a pain in the ass with the power pedals. Not a lot of room to work in there and there is a gear drive that you have to get the teeth aligned correctly and the only way to see it is with a small mirror. I usually sneak them in and out through the driver side underdash area. Sometimes it goes ok (but still a pain in the ass), other times they fight me tooth and nail.

I can dig up the service procedure out of the manual if you want to PM me your email addy.

Jay,

thanks for your help with the procedure, although it's very vague, it wiled! The hardest part is holding the new actuator in place and using one finger to make sure the notch on the actuator gear matches the tab on the door gear!

Took me about an hour and a half and didn't remove the floor vents like called for!

Good deal Steve! Glad you were able to get it done. Yeah lining up the tab with the cam on the door acuator is really the biggest bitch of it all. Pulling the floor vent is super easy so I don't mind getting it out of the way just to make it easier to move around under there. Glad you got it done Bro!

I seem to always have air coming in from the lower ducts too. Even when it's off. I still have normal controls and it separates it from top to bottom... Any problems or is that normal?

Brandon, i'm not sure if this is what you're talking about but there will always be airflow of some sort through the HVAC system as per federal law even when it's off. The blower motor will not operate to supply the ventilation air, but the high pressure air in the cowl area (the same type that a cowl hood takes advantage of) is what makes the airflow. It's got to do with interior ventilation and supplying the interior with fresh air while underway. Usually that ventilation airflow is directed to either the defrost or floor when the system is off.

$920 dollar quote from my lovely local GM service shop for a part that shouldn't go out just because you unhooked the friggin battery and it shorted itself. Unfuckingbelievable that GM puts shit like this into their cars and does nothing about it when someone's out of warranty. I told the service writer that he was out of his fucking tree and theres no way I'm getting it done thru them, it seems to be one fucked up stupid failure after another with this truck and if it continues I'm done with it and I'll go buy a Jeep SRT.
